The island of lemurs, a jewel of nature

Granite from Nosy Komba

Granite from Nosy Komba
A rock the past few years increasing interest in more people to Nosy Komba is granite. Activity around this rock is developed and it seems lucrative given the increasing affluence of many breakers stones, from the highlands, who landed on the island. They break huge granite rocks to extract blocks for the construction of houses, walls, paths … Some of these blocks used to construct local but every week, these blocks leave the shores of Nosy Komba via dhows bound for Nosy Be or high Earth Madagascar. These breakers stonemasons use techniques very small and have no modern device such as power tools or explosives.

The principle of demolition is simple but tedious: Armed with a hammer and chisel they row of holes aligned equal distances then using the mass they break the rock. Larger rocks are heated over a wood fire to crack the block more easily. There arise everywhere around the island of projects ranging from land development to the quarry that produces thousands of granite blocks.
