Fire in Nosy Komba

Wednesday september 21, 2016, an outbreak of fire took place late morning 400 m from Ampangorina village heights.

A hugh fire devastated part of Nosy Komba mountain. Squads of firemen and police went on the spot.

They went twice on the fire spots with 80 courageous villagers equiped with rudimentary ustensils, knives and machettes to stop the fire to spread. The head of the fire brigade based in the Ampangorina village mentionned those ustensils weren’t very effective as there isn’t any access and slopes are too steep, with granit rocks, bamboo trees and pitholes in the way.
Also, firemen didn’t have any compressor, pump nor fire hose.
The 2 to 3 meters break they managed to dig wasn’t useful as the fire continue to spread.

On pictures of the fire taken on wednesday september 21, between 05:00 pm to 08:10 pm, hugh flammes can be seen 400 m from the village.

The fire is still not stoped.
Due to lack of means and poor access, the fire spreads eastwards to Antitorono village.The noice of bursting bamboo trees is impressive and echos in the mountain. The western and north-western wind Talio activates the fire from West to East. One can see remaining foci on village heights while the core of the fire is on Antitorino village heights and Bimangoko in the mountain.
There are no casualties.

It rained on Nosy Komba this morning. Everyone was pleased but the rain lasted for 3 minutes only, then it rained again for 5 minutes at 7.30 am , not strongly enough to stop the fire.

During the day, a team made of firemen, policemen, people  from Nosy Komba and Nosy Be went to fire spots with water tanks to extinguish most important foci.

Nestor, a Nosy Komba mountain guide, heavily involved job in the fire control said : ” Rocs, holes and branches made the access difficult but help stop the spread of the fire. Had it happened on grass, it would have devastated several kilometers”.

Tonight, from the Ampangorina village no blaze and no flamme can be seen.  Smokes are visible in Nosy Komba heights as foci persist.

Endly it rains

Since yesterday evening, it rains on Nosy Komba. Moderated rain continued from 11 pm to 1.25 am.

 

The fire stoped

Saturday september 24, 2016 at 01:00 pm.

Fire forest in Nosy Komba is over. Light smokes remain here and there. Rain fallen all night long helped local squads after two days of effort to stop the fire to spread.

Damage must now be assessed.
